Please respond by email if you will be attending the National's @ Huntington Lake, Ca.
As of this date, specific campgrounds have not been identified for specific SC27 Boats or Social Events and it should be noted that Camp Grounds reservations can only be made 6 months in advance; that would be mid January. We will have more information to the entire class before this timeline.
As for other accommodations, several boats and crews will be staying in Eagle's Nest, Eagle's Landing Condo's in the general Huntington Lake area. Shaver Lake Vacations Rentals at www.shaverlake.com has been helpful with arrangements for local Huntington Lake Condo rentals. We are creating a list of other options for rentals and camping information that we will publish soon as well as the race instructions, cost, etc.
From Mark Schipper:
The names of the campgrounds that are within a stones throw of the Marina are:
College (I think tent camping only)
Deer Creek (up to 40' spots, no hookups but bathrooms have flush toilets)
Catavee (up to 40' spots, no hookups but bathrooms have flush toilets)
Kinnikinnick (up to 40' spots, no hookups but bathrooms have flush toilets)
There is also a tent campground that is a little further from the marina but very popular with the sailing crowd called Rancheria.
Deer Creek and College are lakeside while the others are on the other side of the road. They fill up quickly so reserve quickly if you plan to camp. You can make reservations at http://www.recreation.gov/campgroundSearchResult.do?topTabIndex=CampingSpot
here is a map of the area:
For those who have not had the pleasure of sailing at Huntington Lake....it is not to be missed. It's really a beautiful lake that shares an elevation close to that of Lake Tahoe. The wind is usually very consistent in strength but shifty. I was introduced to Huntington Lake over a decade ago during an SC27 Nationals and my family and I have been back nearly every year, usually for 2 weeks. Huntington is truly one of the unsung gems of the Sierras. The tiny town of Lakeshore is full of friendly people, there are no launch fees, you can anchor almost anywhere you want to (also no fee). There is no hoist so you will need to figure out how to ramp launch your boat.
I could go on and on about this place (bald eagles and osprey, great trout fishing, those killer burgers and shakes at the other end of the lake, blah blah blah) but I'll spare you. Just get up there and enjoy it. You will not regret it. Wish I could go this year but I'm stuck doing the PacCup :)
Mark your Calendars and inform your crews, more specifics to follow.
